When the upper part of a large bearing block *daito 大斗 or square bearing block is hewn to form a square-cross shape. Four upright blocks remain, one at each corner which structurally weaken the bearing block. To overcome this, triangular pieces are left uncut in two facing cuts. Sometimes an extra cross-shaped plate is cut into the block, each end being slightly shorter than the cuts in the block. The *wakuhijiki 枠肘木 is cut in mirror-image form so that when inserted, its parts will fit snugly into strengthening parts on the daito.
