Also written 床店. A small shop *mise 店, or stall, used for retail purposes only, and not part of a dwelling. In Edo in the 18th-19th century, the space beneath the *hisashi 廂 of *machiya 町家 was rented, and other spaces, such as the abutments of bridges, were used, as well as areas in Asakusa 浅草 and Edobashi Hirokōji 江戸橋広小路. Some of the stalls were movable, yataimise 屋台店, and a few were plastered externally, nuriya-zukuri 塗屋造. They sold items such as cakes and woven grass sandals. The stallholder's home base was known as a hikaemise 控え店.
