Also called sutebisashi 捨廂. A pent roof with its under structure exposed that extends above a hardpacked earthen floor *doma 土間. When used on tea ceremony buildings, it is constructed usually on the side with the guest entrance, which is generally the crawl-in type *nijiriguchi 躙口.

Stepping stones in the tea ceremony house garden *roji 露地, lead the guests to the area under the pent roof where the sword rack *katanakake 刀掛 is placed. Because the rafters of the pent roof are long, an eave purlin *dashigeta 出桁 is necessary. Posts called sutebashira 捨柱 are set at wide intervals to support the eave purlin and strengthen the entire pent roof structure.

Dobisashi 土廂 is also used as a synonym, but some scholars who consider the reading dobisashi as a synonym for tsuchibisashi to be incorrect.
Example: Katsura Rikyū 桂離宮, Shōkinntei 松琴亭, Kyoto.
