tsuchido 土戸

1　In the Heian and Kamakura periods, a gate in a pise mud wall *tsuiji 築地.

2　In *dozō-zukuri 土蔵造 structures in the medieval and early modern periods, a fireproof door with its timber frame covered in mud daub *tsuchikabe 土壁 and/or plaster *shikkui 漆喰. Although plastered swing doors such as *kannonbiraki tobira 観音開扉 were technically a kind of tsuchido, the term was usually applied to sliding doors *hikido 引戸, such as those at the front of *misegura 店蔵. These doors ran in a single runner mizo 溝, and were stored in a *tobukuro 戸袋. They were closed during a fire or for security at night.
