The point where two downward sloping roofs meet to form a valley, under which gutters must be set to carry off rain water. Examples are found on Usa Jingū Honden 宇佐神宮本殿 (1854-1861) in Ōita Prefecture, and in Nara, at Tōdaiji *Hokkedō 東大寺法華堂, also called Sangatsudō 三月堂, erected in 748, with the Raidō 礼堂 added in the Kamakura period (1199).
A valley was formed when the latter building was attached and a rain gutter added to carry off water that formed when the two buildings were joined.
