Painting
Also written つくり絵. A painting process associated with the *yamato-e やまと絵 style. First, ink outlines are drawn, then thick, opaque color is applied to the entire painting, and finally, the ink lines are carefully redrawn over the outlines and the important details of the faces and figures are added. Originally this process was employed for detailed colored handscrolls drawn by court painters which illustrated the literature of the Heian period. The famous The Tale of Genji handscroll Genji monogatari emaki 源氏物語絵巻, was produced by this painting process. See *genji-e 源氏絵.
