Also called kowakido 小脇戸. Because they were hinged, they are also called hirakido 開戸. A side entrance. A hinged plank door that was placed at the four corners of the enclosure of a shinden style aristocrat's mansion *shinden-zukuri 寝殿造, a type which flourished during the Heian period. Tsumado were hinged on the side which made them more convenient than *shitomido 蔀戸, which were hinged at the top, and used wherever needed between the corners of the enclosure. Tsumado were latched on the outside when someone left the structure, and again on the inside when someone returned. The clasp type latch is called *kakegane 掛金.
