tsume-no-shiro 詰の城

Also read tsumejiro 詰城, or written 爪城 or tsume-no-shiro 攻の城.

1 The castle that guards the back of the main castle, and serves as a retreat point when the main castle can no longer be defended. Of a group of allied castles, it is the castle located furthest back from the point of enemy attack, usually on the top of a mountain, relatively close to the main castle.

2 The innermost ward *honmaru 本丸 of a castle as opposed to the secondary ward *ni-no-maru 二の丸 and tertiary ward san-no-maru 三の丸.

3 The main castle *honjō 本城 in contrast to a branch castle *shijō 支城.
