Also written 吊床, or called kabedoko 壁床. A type of alcove *tokonoma 床の間 which has neither a front framing board *tokogamachi 床框, nor an alcove post *tokobashira 床柱. Instead, it has short posts hanging from the ceiling. The front wall and side wall opposite the end post attached to the wall extend outward to produce a canopy-like effect. The walls are rough plaster. Below the walls is a matted alcove floor on the same level as the other mats *tatami 畳. This alcove serves the same purpose as others of similar types, that is, as a place to hang a piece of calligraphy, a space for flower arrangements, or for hanging a fan.
