uchikomihagi 打込矧ぎ

Lit. "pounded and inserted stone joinery." The most common stone work technique used to build a dry construction castle wall *ishigaki 石垣. Each surface of the individual stone is roughly beaten and broken so that it can be inserted into the rough and uneven face of the wall. It is different than *kirikomihagi 切込矧ぎ, cut and inserted masonry, where the individual stones are carefully hewn with straight lines and laid in neat rows. Uchikomihagi is used because it is an easier and faster construction technique.
