Pillars *hashira 柱 with an inward incline. Uchikorobi pillars provide stability for *torii 鳥居, the gate-like entrance to a shrine *jinja 神社, or *hikae-bashira 控柱, which serve as props to shore up a fence. Pillars with uchikorobi are also found on shelters, suibansha 水盤社, built over the places of purification at Rinnōji Taiyūin 輪王寺大猷院, built in the mid-17th century in Nikkō 日光, Tochigi Prefecture. Uchikorobi pillars are also used on a building called Eizanji 栄山寺, an Eight-sided Hall hakkakudō 八角堂 (757) Nara. Generally, these pillars were not used for buildings such as temple halls or a vernacular houses.
