A modern city in the southern part of Kyoto where the Byōdōin 平等院 (1052) is located. Historically, Uji was a resort for the nobility during the Heian period, and was frequently depicted in painting. The last ten chapters, Uji jūjō 宇治十帖, of Genji monogatari 源氏物語 (The Tale of Genji) was set in Uji, as was *Ukifune 浮舟, and *Ujigawa no kassen 宇治川の合戦 (The Battles of Uji River) in Heike monogatari 平家物語 (The Tale of The Heike).
In painting, Uji was symbolized by its river, bridge and fishing traps, as seen in *Ujibashi ajiro-zu 宇治橋網代図.
