Currents of Thought on Ukiyo-e, a series of biographies of *ukiyo-e 浮世絵 artists compiled and revised by a number of scholars in the late 18th and 19th centuries. Although the most important reference work relating to ukiyo-e artists, the original text is not extant. Around 1789 (Kansei 寛政 1) Ōta Nanpo 大田南畝 (Shokusanjin 蜀山人; 1749-1823) edited the original text, and in 1800 (Kansei 12) Sasaya Kuninori 笹屋邦教 (dates unknown) added an appendix titled Yamato ukiyo-e no shikei 大和浮世絵の始系 (The Early Lineage of Japanese Ukiyo-e). In 1802 (Kyōwa 享和 2) Santō Kyōden 山東京伝 (1761-1816) amended the text. In 1818 (Bunsei 文政 1) Shikitei Sanba 式亭三馬 (1776-1822) made further revisions, while in 1833 (Tenpō 天保 4) Keisai Eisen 渓斎英泉 (1790-1848) added his own research to the work, calling the version Mumeiō zuihitsu 无名翁随筆 (Miscellany of the Old Man with No Name) or alternatively Zoku ukiyo-e ruikō 続浮世絵類考 (Supplement to Ukiyo-e ruikō). In 1844 (Kōka 弘化 1) Saitō Gesshin 斉藤月岑 (1804-78) appended more information to make Zōho ukiyo-e ruikō 増補浮世絵類考 (Supplement to Ukiyo-e ruikō). Finally, in 1868 (Keiō 慶応 4) Tatsutaya Shūkin 竜田舎秋錦 (dates unknown) added still more material to create Shinzōho ukiyo-e ruikō 新増補浮世絵類考 (New Supplement to Ukiyo-e ruikō).
