1 Also shiagenuri 仕上げ塗. The final layer applied to a decorative painting sōshoku kōji 装飾工事, waterproofing bōsui kōji 防水工事, or a plaster top coating sakan kōji 左官工事. In a wood-core Japanese style wall nihonkabe 日本壁, uwanuri refers to the final layer of plaster applied over *nakanuri 中塗り, and shitanuri 下塗り. See *tsuchikabe 土壁, *dozō-zukuri 土蔵造, *ōnaoshi 大直.

2 A final coat of color which is applied near the end of the process of making a Japanese painting. The pigment applied contains less bonding agent *nikawa 膠 than the undercoats and protects the surface as it colors. As it is applied, the pigment brightens and enlivens the undercoats and encourages the special beauty of the color to come out.
