Also uzumakimon 渦巻文, uzugata 渦形, volute, scroll. A decorative spiral pattern found throughout the world on prehistoric ceramic ware. Variations in China included the spiral-square *inazumamon 稲妻文 and the *unkimon 雲気文 pattern based on "S" and "C" shapes. In Japan, spiral patterns are found on Jōmon period earthenware vessels and wall paintings, genshizumon 原始図文, in cave dwellings yokoana 横穴. In eastern Japan, many earthenware pieces from the early Jōmon period have been found with spiral decoration and patterns of concentric circles dōshin enmon 同心円文 applied around the neck of tall pots in narrow (2 mm) strips of clay. Production reached a peak in the middle Jōmon period, when the upper half of the pots were covered with bold spiral designs in upstanding coils ryūkisenmon 隆起線文. Good examples can be seen in the Fujimichō Sori 富士見町曽利 excavations in Nagano Prefecture.
