The wakiagari allowed visitors to enter or leave the residence from a waiting palanquin kago 駕篭 without touching the ground. A small, side room raised a few steps above a plank-floored platform *shikidai 式台, placed in front of the main entrance *genkan 玄関 to a residence. The steps run along the width of the platform. Between it and the main entrance is a passageway *irikawa入側. Across the front and around the side of the small room opposite the steps is a veranda. A gravel or stone area almost as wide as the wakiagari surrounds the plank-floored platform.
