Joints
Wanagikomi is an angle joint, also called an open mortise and tenon joint, a slip slot or finger mortise. It consists of tie beam *hari 梁 with an open mortise cut deep enough to receive the full breadth of a rafter, and narrow enough to allow a tight fit when the rafter is inserted. The combination of king posts *shinzuka 真束 with tops cut with finger joints and the ridge pole *munagi 棟木 inserted into them is called wanagikomi watariago 輪薙込渡腮. This method is also used in Western construction. Another example of this joint is when a penetrating tie beam *hinuki 飛貫 is joined to a pillar. The wanagikomi method is used in the kyōro system *kyōrogumi 京呂組 of roof framing.
