wariguri-ishi 割栗石

Also called wariguri 割栗, kuri-ishi 栗石 or guri ぐり (lit. "stones crushed like chestnuts"). Rock used for the foundation beds of roads, stone walls and podia, as for example, beneath the *kamebara 亀腹 (turtle belly), the mound under the wooden floor of a temple. The rock is between 20-30 cm in diameter and 6-15 cm in thickness. After the basic groundwork is laid and firmly packed, these broken stones are lined up on end and then gravel mixed with sand is poured over the lower stones to fill in the gaps. This process is called wariguri jigyō 割栗地業.
