Joints
The surface of a member that was split vertically by pounding in a wedge *kusabi 楔. To make a splicing joint *tsugite 継手, a timber is cut with the grain. An example of a joint that has split surfaces is hakodai mochitsugi 箱台持継, a blind tenon and mortise joint, a type of housed splice joint that is used only for pillars. It is secured by a key *shachi 車知. This technique was used before the 13th century.
