Lit. "divided worship hall." A long structure under a single roof divided in the center by a passageway *medō 馬道, that traditionally has an earthen floor *doma 土間. Documents from the Muromachi period describe a worship hall which is composed of an east hall higashi haiden 東拝殿, a central gate *chūmon 中門, and a west hall nishi haiden 西拝殿.
An excellent example and the oldest extant can be found at Isonokami Jingū Sessha Izumo Takeo Jinja 石上神宮摂社出雲建雄神社 in Nara. Undulating gables *karahafu 唐破風 are placed at the openings of the passageway, giving the appearance of a gate with wings on each side. The buildings date from the early Kamakura period, but the undulating gables appear to have been added at a later date.
