Lit. "splitting gauge." The splitting gauge is used to mark thin pieces of wood along the grain so that it can be broken into two pieces without jagged edges. The gauge is about 8 mm wide, and scores the wood more deeply than other gauges.

Since the splitting gauge is a more accurate tool than the saw, and can split a plank with a high degree of precision, it is extremely useful for cutting door and window mullions, and for making corner fittings needed for frames.
