Also written 櫓烟出. Also read yagura kemuridashi. An opening constructed in a thatched roof to allow the escape of smoke from the cooking hearth *irori 囲炉裏 in a farmhouse nōka 農家. The roof above the opening is raised, and the sides are fitted with downward-slanting slats through which the smoke is dispersed. Sometimes it serves as ventilation.

The kitchen *kuri 庫裡 at a Zen temple has the same type of smoke-escape device. For example, at Zuiganji Kuri 瑞巌寺庫裡 (1609), Miyagi Prefecture.
