Lit. "burned brush." A wooden stick with a burned tip. Like charcoal used in western style painting, yakifude is used for underdrawings, and can be easily erased with a feather brush. Originally a round piece of cypress about 30 cm long was sharpened, and approximately 3 cm of the tip was charred. As the tip wore down, it could be burned again. Today, willow is also used.
