General Terms

A window used especially in the Zen style *zenshūyō 禅宗様; a type of ogival window *katōmado 火灯窓. It is generally characterized by S-curves on each side and an ogee-like peak at the top center. Yamamichi katō differs from a typical katōmado because it lacks a point at the top and its S-curves are cut from a board set into the window attached to the sides. The bottom sill is also inserted into the framing posts.
