Lit. "water course." An archaic term for a shallow, curving garden stream. The term, found in the 11th-century garden manual *Sakuteiki 作庭記, is used to describe the stream that feeds the central pond in shinden style gardens *shinden-zukuri teien 寝殿造庭園; yarimizu also describes a kyokusui 曲水. Among extant gardens, the stream in the Kogosho 小御所 garden at Kyoto Gosho 京都御所 is called yarimizu.
