Castles
A small castle or fortification built like a a country house or mansion yashiki 屋敷. In the middle ages, it usually referred to a country house with fortress-like, defensive installations. In the early modern period, even fortresses shiro no kamame 城の構え that were used as residences were termed yashikijiro. Jurakudai 聚楽第 (1587), built in Kyoto by Toyotomi Hideyoshi 豊臣秀吉 (1536-98) and intended to be his government office as Chief Councilor to the Emperor, was clearly a yashikijiro.
