Floors that have different levels. For example, the floor of the alcove *tokonoma 床の間 in a tea ceremony room *chashitsu 茶室 is usually a step higher than the floor in the rest of the room.
The *shoin 書院 style audience hall and the Shiroshoin 白書院 at Nishi Honganji 西本願寺 (1632) in Kyoto, has three floor levels. The lowest level *gedan 下段 is for the audience and is 120 mats *tatami 畳. The middle level is called *jōdan 上段 and is 37 mats. The highest level is called *jōjōdan 上々段 and is 5 mats.
