1 A curved handle-like piece attached to the broad concave parts of a pantile *sangawara 桟瓦 to prevent snow from piling up on a tile roof *kawarayane 瓦屋根. They are usually arranged in a staggered pattern about one meter from the edge of the eaves. However, the placement may vary. The purpose is to allow a gradual sliding off of the snow so that should it fall on a pent roof *hisashi 廂 below, damage would be minimal.
