This image of Pierre Bouchu, a member of the Cistercian order and Abbot of La Ferté at the time of its making, is one of the most sober portraits in the exhibition. The sitter’s short hair and simple garment, ornamented only by a plain cross, are consistent with his religious vocation and emphasize his soft features, gentle gaze and calm expression. Bouchu’s likeness stands out against a subtly modulated background that affords the composition greater volume. Facing the viewer almost frontally, unlike other sitters who are depicted in a more pronounced three-quarter view, Bouchu comes across as particularly genuine. Though little is known about him today, this print suggests that he was an enticing figure.
