Sant Eligio was founded in 1270 by three French knights in the retinue of Charles I of Anjou for the wounded and maimed in CharlesÕ battles, as well as to oversee the burial of foreign soldiers and colonists in Naples. The land for the hospital was donated by Charles of Anjou beside the market square where Conradin had been beheaded in 1268. |
