Amiens Cathedral

Amiens Cathedral, Southern flank of nave and western frontispiece

Here we see the flank of the western frontispiece and the two westernmost chapels on the south side of the nave. The chapel of St Lambert is upstairs, above an doorway into the south nave aisle, and adjacent is the chapel of St Christopher which is angled inwards to avoid blocking a narrow point in the road. The massive statue of St Christopher carrying the infant Jesus was of special significance to pilgrims. The style of the statue, with its crinkled drapery and schematized face, appears to reach back to the "Antique Revival" style found in the early work on the sculptural program of the western portals.
