Amiens Cathedral (Passages)

Passage down the nave: 5

Here we finally begin to comprehend the full extent of the spatial expansion into the transept arm. The diagonal view is enhanced by the wider span of the last arcade of the nave adjacent to the crossing.
It was not until 1773 that a permanent pulpit was erected in the nave: the work of the architect Christophle and the sculptor Dubois. The work--at a price of around 36,000 livres--was paid for by Bishop de la Motte and Canon Cornet de Coupel. Rendered in painted and gilded wood the pulpit is carried by the theological virtues: Faith holding a chalice, Hope with an anchor and Charity nursing a baby. A dove representing the Holy Spirit descends from the sounding board above and a great angel surmounts the composition pointing to heaven and holding a book with the words "Hoc fac et vives: Do this and live." Critical response to the work was enthusiastic.
