The ULAN is a structured vocabulary containing around 220,000 names and biographical information about artists and architects, including a wealth of variant names, pseudonyms, and language variants.
     
  The Getty Research Institute Vocabulary Programs: The Getty Thesaurus of Geographic Names (TGN)
The TGN is a structured vocabulary of around 1,000,000 geographic names, including vernacular and historical names, coordinates, and place types, and focusing on places important for the study of art and architecture.
     
     
     

Important Terms

Engraving: The intaglio process in which the design is incised into the printing plate. Distinct from "wood engraving (process)," which is a process for relief printing. Historically, has sometimes been used to refer to printmaking processes in general, usually those employing printing plates; use the appropriate specific term. For the single step of incising the design, use "engraving (incising)."

Etching: Prints made from an etched printing plate.

Woodcut: A relief process in which the design is cut into and printed from the plank side of a wood block; distinct from "wood engraving (process)," which is a relief process using the grain end of a wood block.
