Tombs 4

Elements of 3 different funerary monuments:

1. Base of the tomb of Bishop Arnoul de la Pierre 1236-1247. Low relief sculpture: the arms of Castille and France, the latter effaced.

2. The recumbent effigy (gisant) of Bishop/Cardinal Jean de la Grange d. 1402. His tomb was originally in the choir. Gisant similar to style of André Beauveveu.

3. Tomb of Canon Guillain Lucas d.1636 kneeling in front of Virgin Mary. Note the famous ange pleureur by Nicolas Blasset. Lucas had established an orphanage, Les enfants bleus

Arnoul de la Pierre had studied theology and taught at the University of Paris; he become chancellor of Amiens in 1221.  He protected Dominicans and Franciscans who established houses in Amiens in 1243-4.

Bishop Arnoul fostered the cult of local saints, writing a Life of Saint Domice whose relics he transferred to cathedral.  In his testament he left rents for feasts of Bishop Sauve and hermits Domice and Ulphe.
