nawakakenuki 縄掛貫

Also called nawakakesan or nawakakezan 縄掛桟, also pronounced nawakakezan. Lit. "rope-hanging beam." A penetrating tie beam *nuki 貫, used in the construction of a storehouse *dozō 土蔵. The nawakakenuki is fixed on top of the rafters slightly above the wide lath *hirokomai 広小舞 in preparation for building up a thick wall of clay and plaster *hachimaki 鉢巻. Ropes, called sagenawa 下げ縄, used to prevent crumbling, are hung from the nawakakenuki before being plastered into the wall.
