A generic term for a deep veranda.



1 A low veranda beyond the main core of a building. In a *shinden-zukuri 寝殿造 building it is called *hirobisashi 広廂 and is outside the aisles *hisashi 廂. It is usually called a *magobisashi 孫廂 in temple buildings and is usually enclosed. In homes of samurai 侍, it is called *ōyuka 大床. An outside veranda of this type may have a slatted floor, in which case it is called sunoko-en 簀子縁.


2 A broad veranda under the eaves with an open, outer, more shallow veranda called *ochi-en 落縁 which was added later. See *buke-zukuri 武家造; *nure-en 濡縁.
