Simplified hail stone style of round-stone paving *tama-ishijiki 玉石敷, in which a limited number of round stones *tama-ishi 玉石 are arranged in a rough and seemingly natural manner. While the related *arare koboshi 霰零し style is used primarily for *sōan 草庵 style gardens, arare kuzushi often is used in *shoin 書院 style gardens. This paving technique aims to express a feeling of artlessness and an air of desolation.
