Also kōchakuzai 膠着剤. Binder, vehicle. A liquid mixed with a pigment *ganryō 顔料, to agglutinate the particles, making a paint *enogu 絵具, in paste form. The binder also adheres the pigment to the picture surface. Painting techniques are classified according to the binder used, for example oil painting uses a drying oil such as linseed oil, while Japanese painting *nihonga 日本画 uses a binder of animal glue *nikawa 膠.
