Paint. Usually refers to an insoluble pigment *ganryō 顔料 or soluble dye senryō 染料, mixed or dissolved in a binder *baizai 媒剤 or thinner yōbai 溶媒. Types of paint such as oil paint abura-enogu 油絵具 and watercolor mizu-enogu 水絵具 are classified according to the binding medium used. Japanese paintings *nihonga 日本画 are usually made with insoluble mineral pigments in a binder of animal glue *nikawa 膠. See *iwa-enogu 岩絵具. Examples include the red pigment *shu 朱, green *rokushō 緑青, and blue *gunjō 群青.
