The method of off-setting alternate stepping stones *tobi-ishi 飛石 to create a zig-zag pattern. This staggered pattern is named after the plover or *chidori 千鳥, a bird known for its off-kilter walk. When two or three stones are set in a straight line and then off-set with another set of stones to make a larger zig-zag, the pattern is called *gan'uchi 雁打 (wild geese), because it resembles the flight of a flock of geese.
