Lit. pond appreciation style. A type of small garden in which the pond is viewed from a veranda or from inside a room, typically *zashiki 座敷, *shoin 書院, or a pavilion. Unlike the large pond stroll garden *chisen kaiyūshiki teien 池泉回遊式庭園, the "pond appreciation garden" is planned to be seen from a single perspective. The so-called upper-lower two-step style garden *jōge nidanshiki teien 上下二段式庭園, such as Tōkōji 東光寺, Yamanashi Prefecture, or Chishakuin智積院, Kyoto, could be considered examples of chisen kanshōshiki teien. A hybrid of this garden is the type of pond garden which is made to be seen from a fixed point inside a building but also is meant to be strolled through. Sentō Gosho 仙洞御所, Kyoto, provides a good example of this hybrid chisen kanshōshiki and chisen kaiyūshiki teien.
