A smoothing plane, used to further smooth the surface of timber after the general roughing plane *arashikō ganna 荒仕工鉋, has been used to remove the first irregularities. The mouth, approximately 1.5 mm, is smaller than that of the arashikō ganna, and the amount of the blade emerging from the sole is also smaller. The material planed away is therefore finer, and so the irregularities left by the arashikō ganna can be removed, using a planking action against the wood grain.
