Tea Houses
Also called *nakabashira 中柱 or *magaribashira 曲柱. A small post placed in the corner of a tea ceremony room where the firebox is set into the smaller mat known as *daime datami 台目畳. The post is made of various types of wood; plum ume 梅, flowering cherry sakura 桜, red pine akamatsu 赤松, and an unbarked slender log or piece of bamboo. A special bent nail *fukurokakekugi 袋掛釘, used to hang a flower vase, is frequently hammered into the post. Example: Saihōji Shōnantei 西芳寺湘南亭 (1596-1615), Kyoto.
