The Edo period Edo branch of the Kano school of painting *Kano-ha 狩野派. The Kyoto branch is called *Kyōganō 京狩野. Edoganō includes the high-ranking painting families known as the *oku-eshi 奥絵師, as well as lower ranking branches of the Kano school, such as the *omote-eshi 表絵師. The term, however, can also refer more specifically to the four branches of the oku-eshi: the Kajibashi Kano 鍛冶橋狩野; the Kobikichō Kano 木挽町狩野; the Nakabashi Kano 中橋狩野; and the Hamachō Kano 浜町狩野. These families were the official painters for the shogunate.
