Lit. distant mountain stone. The stone in an arrangement placed above or behind artificial mountains *tsukiyama 築山 and stone constructions for garden waterfall *taki-ishigumi 滝石組 in order to suggest deep space in gardens. Enzanseki are found in Japanese gardens since the Kamakura period and reflect the values associated with Chinese Northern Song landscape style gardens *hokusō sansuigashiki teien 北宋山水画式庭園. Typically a tall standing stone or a triangular stone is used, and they are frequently accompanied by smaller stones.
