Roofing Tiles
The length of the visible surface of an ordinary broad, concave roofing tile, *hiragawara 平瓦, that was laid in an overlapping pattern starting at the edge of the eaves. Although there was no fixed size, on average, these tiles were about 30 cm wide at their wider end and approximately 40 cm long. Furthermore, there was no prescribed size for the visible surface of the tile, but usually about 15 cm for each group of three tiles was discernible, leaving about two thirds of each tile covered. Fukiashi also applies to roofing with shingles, *kokerabuki 柿葺, and cypress bark shingles, *hiwadabuki 桧皮葺.
