A railing *kōran 高欄, with newel posts, oyabashira 親柱, topped with an onion shaped decoration called *giboshi 擬宝珠. Railings of this type were used in Japanese style architecture *wayō 和様, whereas Zen style *zenshūyō 禅宗様 railings usually had a lotus decoration *gyakuren 逆蓮, on the newels.
