General Terms
1 A generic term for any group of structural members set in a grid pattern.
2 The grid pattern formed by the trim on the doors of gate in a mud wall *heijūmon 塀重門. The term igeta is often widely used for any diamond-shaped trim decoration, hishi igeta 菱井桁, on doors or transoms *ranma 欄間. A break in the span of the grid pattern is called *yareigeta 破井桁 (broken grid). The first character means "well"; the second means "purlin" or "beam," *keta 桁. Thus, igeta means the upper-most frame built on the square side of a well crib.
