jigyō 地業

Also 地形 chikei. The preliminary foundation work on a building. Materials for this include: rubble *wariguri-ishi 割栗石, stakes *kui 杭, gravel *jari 砂利, sand for foundation sunajigyō 砂地業, and base stones and smooth rounded large stones 20-25 cm *tama-ishi 玉石, used at the base of the posts. In the early centuries 7th-12th century, jigyō included the shape of the building site and the nature of the soil.
