Lit. upper seat alcove. Also read kamizadoko. An alcove *tokonoma 床の間 situated in a forward position to the left of the host's mat *temae datami 点前畳 in a tea ceremony room *chashitsu 茶室. This term is used in contrast with *gezadoko下座床 (lower seat alcove), an alcove on the right of the host's mat. Example: Daitokuji Ryūkōin Mittan no seki 大徳寺龍光院密庵の席, Kyoto. Attributed to Kobori Enshū 小堀遠州 (1579-1647).
